Peter Winograd, Violin
Winner of one of the top prizes in the 1988 Naumburg International Violin Competition, Peter Winograd continues to establish himself as one of the most promising American violinists. Following his New York debut at Alice Tully Hall, Bernard Holland wrote in the New York Times: "...his open-throttle intensity in the Beethoven Concerto had an irresistible exuberance. He has a good technique and single-minded devotion to his material. He is an attractive musical personality."
Mr. Winograd gave his first public performance at the age of 11, and at 17 was accepted as a scholarship student of Dorothy Delay at the Juilliard School. He was first-prize winner of the Paganini Competition at the Aspen Music Festival and won the Bryan Young Artists Competition in North Carolina. He has performed with many orchestras including the Hartford, Pueblo, and North Carolina symphonies.
As a recitalist, Mr. Winograd has performed throughout the United States and Europe. Highlights include appearances in Brussels, Helsinki and the Great Hall at the Moscow Conservatory. A tour of Norway with pianist Gail Niwa in 1990 included a recital at the birthplace of composer Edvard Grieg.
Last season, Mr. Winograd performed the Sibelius Violin Concerto wuth the Hartford Symphony under the direction of his father, Arthur Winograd. In May, he appeared as soloist with the New Jersey Youth Symphony in Alice Tully Hall. Mr. Winograd is the first violinist of the American String Quartet and is a member of the violin faculty at the Manhattan School of Music.
