Artist Biography

Ethan Bauch, Bassoon

A graduate of The Juilliard School (B.M., M.M), Ethan Bauch was the first student there ever to have been awarded a graduate teaching fellowship in the woodwind department while still an undergraduate.

Mr. Bauch has received numerous awards including the Elsie W. Naumberg Award for orchestral excellence and the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences' Most Valuable Player Award. In his youth, he was the winner of several competitions such as the Great Neck Symphony Competition and the Long Island Youth Orchestra Scholarship Competition.

Ethan made his New York debut as soloist at the age of 19 with The New York Philharmonic in a nationally televised Young People's Concert under the direction of Michael Tilson Thomas. He has been soloist with numerous other organizations since, including The New York Chamber Soloists, The Musica Aeterna Orchestra and The Philharmonia Virtuosi.

As a performer, Mr. Bauch has enjoyed tremendous success in a variety of genres. He has performed with dozens of orchestras for symphony, opera and ballet, and has appeared in the orchestras of numerous shows on Broadway including Pacific Overtures, On the 20th Century, Sweeney Todd, West Side Story, Dancin', Nicholas Nickleby, All's Well That Ends Well, Carousel, Damn Yankees, Guys & Dolls, Grand Hotel, Once Upon a Mattress, How to Succeed in Business, ...Forum, Phantom of the Opera, and Beauty & the Beast to name only a few. In addition, he has performed in back-up ensembles for popular artists such as Frank Sinatra, Tony Bennett, Ray Charles, Sheena Easton, Jean-Luc Ponty, Harry Connick, Jr., and The Moody Blues, as well as for the soundtrack recordings of hundreds of TV and radio commercials numerous record albums and motion picture soundtracks. Ethan has also appeared on TV shows such as Saturday Night Live, Late Night with David Letterman and the Rosie O'Donnell Show. He is currently the bassoonist with the Dorian Wind Quintet.

In addition to his career as a free-lance bassoonist and teacher in the New York metropolitan area, Bauch has served on the boards of the Recording Musicians Association and the Coalition for the Advancement of Live Music and has published numerous articles about the business of music and the social benefits of music education.
