Artist Biography

Caterina Szepes, Violin

Since her debut recital on Rias Berlin Radio in1 987, Caterina Szepes, a native of Berlin, has appeared both as soloist and as chamber musician throughout Europe, Australia, South America and the United States. Among her numerous awards are first prize in the Cleveland Institute of Music Concerto Competition, one of the top prizes in the Mendelssohn Competition in Berlin, and first prize in the Berlin National Youth Competition. She was awarded two consecutive full scholarships from thr German Academic Exchange Service from 1991-1993.

Ms. Szepes has been invited to participate in various chamber music festivals in the U.S., including Taos, N.M., Marlboro, Ravinia, Foothills, Amelia Island and Kingston, R.I. She has appeared with the Seacliff Chamber Players, Philomusica, and at the Barge in Brooklyn. She regularly plays chamber music with friends from the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra, performing at Alice Tullt Hall, the Metropolitan Museum of Art and other venues. As an orchestral musician, she has performed under Claudio Abbado with the Berlin Philharmonic, Nikolaus Harnoncourt with the Chamber Orchestra of Europe, and toured regularly with the Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen, the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra, and the Orchestra of St. Luke's in New York City. In 1997, she became a member of the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra under the direction of James Levine.

Ms. Szepes received her training in Karlsruhe, Germany, graduating with an artist diploma, summa cum laude, while studying with the German violinist Ulf Hoelscher.
